the best place to play the guqin

An auditory installation inspired by the Guqin’s tradition of intimate and nature-bound playing. In contrast to today’s urban noise, the work explores how an ancient practice might find new resonance in contemporary life.

Introduction

The Guqin is an ancient Chinese string instrument. Then, Chinese literati often sought out natural, tranquil environments to play the Guqin intimately as a means of self-cultivation.  In contrast, modern life offers few such spaces. We are often left to retreat into soundproof studios or the confines of our bedrooms, creating an artificial quietness far removed from the Guqin’s original spirit.

Prototype

The prototype consist of a 3D printed listening station, a keypad and headphones. The listening station uses NFC tags embedded in individual discs, which trigger playback of their corresponding environmental audio when scanned. The keypad is programmed with Guqin notes, allowing users to play and experiment with the instrument’s tonal qualities while immersed in the selected natural soundscape.
